The Department of Nephrology provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient consultations covering all aspects of nephrology, hypertension, dialysis and renal transplantation.

Our Services

Providing over 4,000 consultations per year, the Department consists of Prof Jacob Sevastos (Head of Department, St Vincent’s Public and Private Hospitals) and Dr Mark Penny.
 
Both physicians work in close collaboration with all disciplines within the St. Vincent’s Private and Public Hospitals and the St. Vincent’s Clinic. Both are Fellows of the Australasian College of Physicians, members of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology and of the International Society of Nephrology. ProfSevastos is also a member of the American Society of Nephrology, the Transplantation Society of Australia and New Zealand and The Transplantation Society. The Department is actively involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching and research.
 
The Department offers consultations for the investigation and treatment of:
  • Acute and chronic kidney diseases inclusive of renal biopsies
  • Electrolyte and acid/base imbalances
  • Renal complications of systemic diseases and advice on immunosuppressant therapies
  • Hypertension
  • Dialysis, both acute and long-term, either haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
  • Renal transplantation, with St. Vincent’s Private Hospital being the only Private Hospital in NSW offering an acute living transplant service (headed by Prof Sevastos).
Immediate consultations are available for urgent cases.
